How to Read an Academic Journal Article

You will likely have to read several articles before you find ones that are useful in your research. The most effective way of reading a psychology article is not from beginning to end. You will likely get bogged down in the details of the study. Rather, read the journal article in the following order:

  1. Abstract
    • Does it sound useful? If not, move on to the next article.
    • Do you understand the abstract? If not, move on to the next article.
  2. Introduction
  3. Discussion (at the end!)

You can always go back and read the rest of the article later. For now, stop after the Discussion and move on with your research.
