Step 1: Conduct background research

Pick a topic that interests you, then read general information about it. Here are a few good sources of general, background information:

Encyclopedias

Encyclopedias provide an overview of your topic and often lead you to more in-depth sources.

Remember, right now you're doing background research that will allow you to focus your in-depth research. You won't cite an encyclopedia in your lit review, but it will help you figure out what to search for in the next step.

Books - just read the titles

For now, just scan the titles to learn how much material is available on the topic. If there isn’t much, you may need to broaden or change your topic.
