Al-Hijra

Al-Hijra, the Islamic New Year, marks the end of Mohammad's journey from Mecca to Medina.

Holiday greeting: Kulla 'Aamin wa antum bi khair (May every year find you in good health)

Arba'een

Arba'een is a Shia religious observance that occurs forty days after the Day of Ashura. It commemorates the martyrdom of Al-Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad.

Ashura

Ashura is a day of fasting and/or mourning. It marks the parting of the Red Sea and, for Shia Muslims, the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali.

Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha is a 4 to 12 day celebration commemorating Abraham's sacrifice and the end of Hajj. Eid al-Ahda is generally considered the holiest Islamic festival.

Eid ul-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is a celebration at the end of Ramadan. Observance includes prayers and a festive meal.

Mawlid

Mawlid celebrates the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad and is widely but not universally celebrated by Muslims with prayer, outdoor celebrations, communal meals, or fasting.

Ramadan

Ramadan is a month of reflection, fasting, and study. Fasts are held during daylight and broken at night with celebrations.
